Despite U.S. press being unable to attend this year’s 77th Venice Film Festival, there was still a ban in place for U.S. travelers to Europe, the film festival went on, going half-digital so that, stateside at least, film journalists could cover the prestigious festival.

”Falling” is Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut, an austere, sometimes rewarding film, which features the absolute worst movie father since James Coburn raised hell in Paul Schrader’s “Affliction.”

The trailer for the new sci-fi film, “Bliss,” is causing divisive reaction on social media. It’s concept is meant to be a total mindfuck, with the plot seemingly playing as something of a hybrid mix between “Inception” and “The Matrix.” The question being asked is simple; Why wake up and experience the real world when the simulation is way better than your actual life? This is something we may be realistically asking ourselves in the future (maybe 100 years from now?).

One of the highlights of this year’s New York Film Festival has been watching Steve McQueen’s new film anthology, “Small Axe.” NYFF chose three of the five films featured in the upcoming BBC series, “Lovers Rock” “Mangrove” and “Red, White, and Blue.” The first two were chosen for competition for Cannes 2020 before the festival had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter had its world premiere at NYFF and was just screened for press.

Don’t believe the hype, actress-turned-director Regina King isn’t, all of a sudden, some seasoned director who delivered a “great” movie during the fall festival season. No, her “One Night in Miami” actually deserves to be called the most overpraised movie of 2020.

The plot for Thomas Vinterberg’s latest film, “Another Round,” which was part of the Official Selection of this year’s canceled Cannes Film Festival, has a group of friends deciding to hold an experiment to see if maintaining a certain level of alcohol intoxication can benefit their daily lives. Just one look at the recently released trailer shows that what starts off as a successful venture, both professionally and personally for these scruples of liquid poison, turns into total chaos and dependence on the substance.

David Gordon Green’s “Halloween Kills” had its October release delayed until 2021. Kino Lorber will be releasing “Born to Be,” an absolutely fascinating doc I saw at last year’s New York Film Festival. This is poignant stuff, following the work of Dr. Ting, the head surgeon at Mt. Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, Director Tania Cypriano uses an extremely sensitive touch to her film, this is not the easiest watch, depicting the grueling process of sex-change operations.

Netflix’s “The White Tiger” is director Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s award-winning novel. Is this another Oscar contender that will need to be added to the streaming giant’s neverending list of fall titles? Maybe, maybe not. The subject matter is pertinently relevant, tackling the poor and disenfranchised of India.

Post-Male-Gaze ‘Charlie's Angels'
They are NOT walking around in swimsuits, okay? But they're REALLY smart and they can kick male ass! That’s what this trailer is telling me, but it all comes off as superficial rather than exuding any sort of believability, which what this thing desperately needs if it wants to achieve its goal of sucking us into its espionage world. Imagine the paycheck Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska must have gotten for this … but can anyone actually suspend disbelief and coherently argue that these gals have the chops to beat superimposing deep state assassins? Not a chance.

Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland isn’t a terrible casting decision. It could work. Zellweger and Garland both have what you might call "unconventional movie star looks". Garland did, however, age terribly in her ‘40s. All the mentally draining stuff she had to go through eventually took its toll .

Yes, this is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" is currently in the works and that McGregor will star as the adult version Danny Torrence.
