First Image: Oscar Isaac in Paul Schrader's ‘The Card Counter'

May 1, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Earlier this decade, Paul Schrader had mentioned how he once considered Oscar Isaac for “First Reformed” but, in the end, Schrader thought the actor was ten years too young to take on the role of Father Toller. Instead, Ethan Hawke nabbed the role and it turned out to be one of his very best performances.

“Triple Frontier" is A-Grade Action With More Brains Than Brawns [Review]

March 6, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Former elite soldiers go on an Expendables-like heist thriller in J.C. Chandor’s (“All Is Lost,” “A Most Violent Year”) indelibly exciting and pulse-pounding “Triple Frontier.”

In a new interview with the Daily Beast Episode IX actor Oscar Isaac said the final chapter of the Star Wars saga “deals with [Fisher’s death] quite a bit. It’s a strange thing to be on the set and to be speaking of Leia and having Carrie not be around. There’s definitely some pain in that,”adding, “[‘Episode IX’] deals with the amazing character that Carrie created in a really beautiful way.”

Post 'Star Wars: Episode IX', Oscar Isaac Is Taking the Year Off From Acting

October 13, 2018 Jordan Ruimy

If there's a harder working actor/actress than Oscar Isaac I plead for you to name him/her.

Now that we've settled that, I do believe that the filmography Isaac has created this past decade cannot be touched by any other actor, safe, maybe, Joaquin Phoenix. You don't believe me? How else would you describe a career that in the past 6 years has given us "Inside Llewyn Davis," "A Most Violent Year," "Ex-Machina," and two "Star Wars" movies?

Isaac spoke to IndieWire yesterday at NYFF, as his latest film, the Vincent Van Gogh biopic "At Eternity's Gate" was having its North American premiere. The 39-year-old Guatemalan-born actor didn't hesitate in saying that he's zonked. In fact, he will take an entire year off from acting.

“I haven’t really stopped for 10 years,” he said. “I’m just going to be with family and taking a bit of a rest.”

And yet, with all that being said, he still has two important movies being released in 2019:

Review: 'Operation Finale' disappoints despite Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley's roaring performances

August 27, 2018 Jordan Ruimy

How can I actually explain what is wrong with Chris Weitz' "Operation Finale"? That's the question that I pondered as I exited the screening of this post-WWII Jewish hunt for Nazis, and was reminded, oddly enough, of the equally dull "Argo." What both films oddly share in common is a rather pedantic, oddly mediocre look at what is, in essence, an extraordinary true story. Suffice to say, this is not the invigoratingly authentic, no-frills cinema of Jews chasing Nazis that I had in mind. I guess what I'm trying to say is this: "Operation Finale" is no "Munich."
