“How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?”: Infectiously Entertaining Doc Tackles Rise and Fall of The Bee Gees [Review]

December 15, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

It wasn’t easy being a Disco star back at the peak of the dance mania, just ask Ther Bee Gees who are the subject of a wildly entertaining documentary courtesy of director Frank Marshall. Titled “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?“ this compulsively watchable treatise on the Brothers Gibb was set to premiere at the since-canceled Telluride Film Festival during the first week of September, alas, it has now settled for a streaming exclusive on HBO and HBO Max.

Steven Soderbergh is a legend of independent filmmaking His latest, the HBO Max comedy “Let Them All Talk,” was shot in just two weeks and was largely improvised by its cast. A major disappointment at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was without a doubt “Native Son.” From first-time director Rashid Johnson, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Suzan-Lori Park, this A24 and HBO production is based on the acclaimed Richard Wright novel of the same name.

A total freakout is happening over the unsubstantiated Michael Jackson sex-abuse doc “Leaving Neverland,” including radio stations banning Jackson’s songs, The Simpsons axing their MJ episode, and his statue being taken down at the British Museum.

‘Leaving Neverland’ Trailer: Problematic and One-Sided HBO Documentary Has Abuse Victims Speaking Out

February 19, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
leaving-neverland-slice.jpg

I saw Dan Reed’s problematic “Leaving Neverland” a week, or so, ago and it disturbed me in more ways than one. First off, the graphically detailed description by James Safechuck and Mark Robson of how Jackson sexually abused them as kids makes for some uncomfortable viewing. But also, if you know the background of these two guys, Robson has, by all accounts, lied under oath about Jackson in a court of law, among other sketchy things, you start to also become disturbed by Reed’s one-sided argument.

HBO Hires On-Set 'Intimacy Coordinator' to Overlook All Sex Scenes in Their Shows

October 26, 2018 Jordan Ruimy
game of thrones.jpeg

HBO wants to make sex scenes safe and more comfortable for its actors. After all, the cable network has been known to push the boundaries when it comes to graphic nudity on-screen. I don't need to name the shows, you know the culprits. However, we do need to mention "Game of Thrones" due to the last few seasons having, err, expanded on the show's graphic sex scenes and brought it to damn-near pornographic-levels. Of course, a backlash happened for the way 'Thrones' depicted the gratuitous sex and nudity, most of which involved women.
