Here’s an intriguing bit of casting news.
Variety reports that Adam Pearson (“A Different Man”) has been cast as Joseph Merrick in a new film adaptation of “The Elephant Man.” This version will be based on Bernard Pomerance’s Tony Award-winning play, with a screenplay written by Pomerance’s son, Moby Pomerance. Filming is slated to begin in spring 2026.
Pearson’s casting is both practical and inspired. While it may reduce the need for extensive makeup, it also reflects a thoughtful choice in representation. Pearson delivered a standout performance in “A Different Man,” and he was also notable in Jonathan Glazer’s “Under the Skin,” where he appeared alongside Scarlett Johansson. His performances have been widely praised for their authenticity and for challenging stereotypes about disfigurement.
What’s particularly curious about Variety’s report is the absence of any mention of the film’s director. As far as I know, there are currently two ‘Elephant Man’ projects in development—one by Jack Huston and another by Kornél Mundruczó. Given that Huston’s version is being scripted by Marcus Hinchey and Nick Yarborough—not Moby Pomerance—it seems likely that Pearson is attached to Mundruczó’s project.
Merrick, a severely deformed man in 19th-century London, was exploited as a sideshow attraction before being taken in by the compassionate Dr. Frederic Treves. David Lynch’s 1980 film, shot in black and white, explored themes of human dignity, compassion, and societal cruelty.
Lynch’s film was a critical and commercial success, and one of the great biopics of the 20th century, earning eight Oscar nominations including Picture, Director and Actor.
