Many didn’t believe this would happen. Not only is ‘Shōgun’ Season 2 in development, but an early 2026 shoot has now been set up. The second season will take place 10 years after the events of the first.
Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Yoshii ) and Cosmo Jarvis (John Blackthorne) are set to return in their respective roles. No word yet on what the rest of the cast will look like. The FX show was the most acclaimed of 2024 — for many, it felt like a cinematic event. A one and done deal.
The main obstacle now is to have a good story to tell; unlike the first season, there is no second book to adapt. Hopefully, it doesn’t end up like ‘Game of Thrones,’ which was thrust into a similar situation. Fact is that “Shōgun” was very much intended as a limited series, and no work on a 2nd season was done until FX saw how popular it got.
“Shōgun” Season 1 was based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, which was itself loosely based on real events in Japanese history. We should be skeptical about how a second season would look like, especially without an established book to base it on. Clavell had been asked to write a second novel by FX, but declined the offer.
