It puzzled many when J.C. Chandor decided to direct “Kraven the Hunter” — a surprising choice for a filmmaker who was championed by critics for his ‘70s-style cinema. ‘Kraven’, based on the Marvel Comics character, ended up bombing with critics and audiences.
Here’s some great news. Chandor will be going back to his roots and is set to write and direct “Zebra Killer,” “contemporary thriller” for Sony Pictures. It’s being touted as his next directorial effort. The first draft of the script is done, and a cast is already circling the project. Roman Vasyanov (“Fury”) is attached as cinematographer. A shoot is being eyed for this fall.
Although plot details are currently being kept under wraps, the film is said to tackle the “investigation of a death in a moneyed dynastic family.” It was previously compared as being a hybrid of “Succession” and “Erin Brockovich”
Before ‘Kraven,’ Chandor had the potential to become a major filmmaker. His first three films, “Margin Call,” “All is Lost” and, especially, “A Most Violent Year” were all impressive. I even liked his fourth one, the underrated “Triple Frontier,” which was met with mixed reviews.
