Mimi Cave’s “Holland” was shot in early 2023. The film stars Nicole Kidman, and set to premiere at SXSW before going straight to Prime Video on March 27. The film now has a first trailer.
These days, if a mid-budget and adult-oriented drama isn’t vying for Oscars then its fate could very well be set for streaming. Based on the footage I’m seeing in the trailer, this is a film that would have been theatrically released five years ago, but is now seen as a non-entity by the streaming overlords. With Kidman’s participation, and a meaty melodramatic plot, the film will probably rake in high viewership numbers on Prime, but at what cost?
In “Holland,” Kidman plays a smalltown wife, teacher and homemaker, who suspects her husband of leading a double life — she ends up dragging her friendly colleague (Gael Garcia Bernal) into the mystery. Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) is her husband, and “Belfast” breakout Jude Hill stars as her son.
Cave is coming off her 2022 debut, “Fresh” — an inventive cannibal dramedy starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan. Ironically, the film, a hit at Sundance, also went straight to streaming on HULU.
