‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Might Have Stacked A-List Cast

April 9, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

These ‘Hunger Games’ leaks don’t interest me all that much, but there is certainly a massive fanbase for these films and the franchise has delivered a couple of good instalments.

The latest one is titled “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” and offers have been dished out to a handful of top-notch actors. Most of these names have yet to be confirmed by the trades, but the intel come from Nexus Point News, which has become a somewhat reliable outlet.

So far, the ensemble for ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ is stacked with talent, including Oscar winners; the likes of Elle Fanning (Effie), Charlie Plummer (Haywitch), Emma Thompson (Drusilla), Ralph Fiennes (Snow), and Kieran Culkin (Caesar) have all been mentioned in various reports.

The adaptation is set to start production in July. As announced by Lionsgate, Francis Lawrence will be directing the film with Billy Ray writing the script. There have been four ‘Hunger Games’ movies with the last one being “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” starring WoR fave Rachel Zegler.

I will say I didn’t mind ‘Songbirds & Snakes,’ but the first two Jennifer Lawrence-starring ‘Hunger Games’ instalments, especially ‘Catching Fire,’ were far and away the best of the lot.

Lawrence isn’t a bad filmmaker. Sure, a paycheck guy, but he tends to deliver from time to time. I went through his filmography and, hey, it turns out he’s actually directed a handful of decent studio films over the course of his 20+ year career. Nothing overtly exceptional, but he’s been consistent: “Constantine,” “I Am Legend,” and “Catching Fire” are the clear highlights.

Described as a prequel, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is said to follow the Second Quarter Quell, and is the origin story of Haymitch, who had been previously played by Woody Harrelson. It’s set for release on November 20, 2026.
