James Hawes’ “The Amateur,” shot in early 2023, has a talented ensemble that includes Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.
One look at its WGA credits and you notice how a shocking number of writers worked on the script, a whopping ten in total, including Scott Z Burns, Patrick Ness and Scott Frank. Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli are the only two who get credited, per WGA ruling, but man, this one had a lot of revisions.
The film is an adaptation of Robert Littell's 1981 novel of the same name and stars Malek as Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer whose life is upended when his wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London. That’s when the film seemingly turns into a revenge flick.
A trailer for “The Amateur” was released in November, it also had a 30-second “big game spot” during the Super Bowl. 20th Century Studios is releasing the film in theatres on April 11, 2025.
