A24 Picks Up Paolo Sorrentino's ‘Parthenope'

May 3, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

A24 has acquired North American rights to Paolo Sorrentino’s “Parthenope,” ahead of its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The movie follows Parthenope, who born in the sea of Naples in 1950, searches for happiness over the long summers of her youth, falling in love with her home city and its many memorable characters. Sorrentino shot the Italian-French co-production between Naples and Capri.

Last November, Some stunning first images were released. It looks like the film was shot both in beautiful black and white and color.

Gary Oldman is in the cast of “Parthenope”. Whether it’s a large or supporting role remains to be seen (via Deadline). Word is that this is a story with a mosaic cast of characters. Another ambitious endeavor for Sorrentino.

Sorrentino’s latest is said to be based on a Neapolitan legend: The Siren of Parthenope. In reality, the Siren is said to only be the starting point of Sorrentino's mysterious new film. The story is rumoured to pass through numerous Neapolitan eras, traveling through time and touching on themes such as that of the San Gennaro.

The cast includes Oldman, Celeste Dalla Porta, Silvia Degrandi, Isabella Ferrari, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Peppe Lanzetta, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Stefania Sandrelli, Alfonso Santagata, Nello Mascia and Biagio Izzo.

Sorrentino is coming off 2021’s “The Hand of God,” which won him the Grand Jury Prize at Venice and was nominated for Best International Film at the Oscars. Other notable works in his filmography include “The Great Beauty” and “Il Divo.”
