Steven Soderbergh has set up his next film, “The Christophers.” Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, and James Corden are set to star in the film, which goes into production in London in February (via Deadline).
“The Christophers” is being described as a “dark comedy” following the estranged children of an artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death.
Most recently, Soderbergh directed “Black Bag,” a spy thriller for Focus Features, starring Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, and Regé-Jean Page, which hits theaters on March 14. Soderbergh also has “Presence,” which premiered at Sundance, hitting theaters on January 17.
Soderbergh is a workhorse. He never stops. Ever since unretiring in 2017, he’s averaged, at least, one movie or series a year. The prolific filmmaker has moved from psychological thriller, to drama, to comedy, albeit never allowing the films to lose that distinct Soderbergh-ian touch. He’s a genre-hopper, and he does it effortlessly.
Yes, Soderbergh retired in early 2013, clarifying that he had a five-year plan that saw him transitioning away from making feature films when he reached his 50th birthday. And yet, here we are at the start of a new decade, and, so much for retirement. Soderbergh has released 8 movies in the last 6 years, including “Logan Lucky” and “KIMI.”
There are too many top-tier Soderbergh films to list, but prime among them are “Traffic,” “The Limey,” and “Out of Sight.”
