David Fincher's ‘Squid Game: America' is Now A Series

October 22, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

I recently reported that one of David Fincher’s upcoming projects was going by the title of “Squid Game: America.” Yes, this is Fincher’s upcoming English-language take on Korea’s “Squid Game,” which became a major sensation on Netflix.

Here’s a report, via Daniel Richtman, mentioning that “Squid Game: America” has now turned into a series, and is not a remake but rather a spinoff set in the States. This means that characters from the the original show might make appearances. There’s also mention about filming expected to begin in late 2025.

Earlier this year, The Playlist’s Rodrigo Perez reported that Fincher’s spinoff had been brewing at Netflix since 2021, which is the same year “Squid Game” became this massive hit on the streamer. This led to Fincher putting his “Chinatown” prequel on the backburner and focusing on “Squid Game.”

Netflix has yet to comment or make this project official, but it’s seems to be happening. Perez added that last year Fincher hired writer Dennis Kelly (“Utopia”) to work on the script. There’s no word yet on whether Kelly is still involved.

In the meantime, Fincher’s next film is the neo-western “Bitterroot” which has a mysterious actor attached to star, and is currently eyeing an “early 2025” shoot. Michael Gilio wrote the script, which has been compared to Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven,” and was originally part of the 2008 Black List.

Fincher, who recently renewed his Netflix contract until 2027, has at least four different projects in various stages of development at Netflix, including “Squid Game: America,” “Bitterroot” and his Robert Towne penned “Chinatown” prequel series.
