Trailer For “Yesterday”: Director Danny Boyle Imagines A World Where The Beatles Never Existed

March 14, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Danny Boyle‘s “Yesterday” has an agreeable concept; What if The Beatles never existed and you happened to be the only person in the world that can recall their entire repertoire of great tunes?

Himesh Patel plays “Jack Malik,” the only person in the world that remembers John/Paul/Ringo/George making music history between 1962 and 1970. He uses the surreal nature of his peculiar situation to kick-start a career as a successful musician by ripping off the fab four’s songs, except is it really plagiarizing if nobody remembers them?

The film has been chosen to close the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, a bad sign given that it means the film has decided to skip the fall festival season altogether and that it was also either rejected by Berlin and SXSW or that it didn’t even bother trying to attempt to appear at those fests.

Nevertheless, the trailer is a fun watch, cookie cutter classics such as “Yesterday”, “Let It Be” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” appear and there is the overall feeling that Boyle is having a blast shooting the visuals.

Boyle’s last few movies have been decent; 2010’s “127 Hours,” was more-than-worthy, 2013 sci-fi mindfuck “Trance” is still an incredibly underrated gem, 2015’s disappointing “Steve Jobs” was filled with hit/miss moments and 2017’s “T2: Trainspotting” could have been so much more than it actually was.

“Yesterday: will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on May 5th, 2019 and is set for a wide release on June 28th, 2019.

Genre: Feel-Good Comedy Cast: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon Director: Danny Boyle Writer: Richard Curtis Producers: Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Bernie Bellew, Matthew James Wilkinson, Richard Curtis, Danny Boyle Executive Producers: Nick Angel, Lee Brazier Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs.
