I have already covered everything that needs to be covered about the Cannes Film Festival’s May date being delayed to July. Regardless, it was made official today by the festival’s head brass, again, no surprise there.

Cannes Film Festival Says Earliest Date For Cancellation Would Be April 15th

March 14, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

As of print, France was going through a total shutdown all non-essential public spaces amid the coronavirus outbreak, imposing closures on everything except Grocery stores, Pharmacies, Banks, Gas Stations and, of course, Tobacco stores, because the chain-smoking French can't go without their cigarettes. Covid-19 Coronavirus cases have risen significantly enough in the last 24 hours that a total shutdown was inevitable. And, remember, France also shares a vast and important border with Italy, which has been hit hard, very hard, by the pandemic.

Why Cannes is Still the Best Film Festival in the World

April 19, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

There will, no doubt, be a lot of heated discussions in regards to the Cannes Film Festival, which officially begins on May 14th. These write-ups will come mostly from American media hounds in the film industry, most of which seem to have a very narrow-minded way of looking at cinema.

Notes: Cannes 2019 Lineup Includes Malick, Almodovar, Dardennes and Dolan

April 18, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

This morning’s Cannes press conference had absolutely no surprise at all. 99% of what we predicted would be in competition was, in fact, in competition. The Un Certain Regard selection did have a few surprises, including three American debuts.

Final Cannes 2019 Predictions

April 16, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

The Cannes Film Festival will be unveiling their lineup tomorrow morning (EST). It feels like Christmas eve for us down here at WoR. The boxes of gifts will be unwrapped tomorrow and we will, hopefully, be very excited by what will be selected. I do not expect the likes of Aster, Zhao, Reichardt, Eggers and Schultz making it into official competition but I would love to see these directors appear in the sidebars like Un Certain Regard.

Cannes 2019: Jay Roach's ‘Fair and Balanced' to Premiere Out of Competition? Iannucci as well?

April 11, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
cannes.jpg

Cineuropa has always been one of the more reliable European outlets for Cannes rumors. Today they posted their annual preview of the fest, which is set to take place May 14th through May 25th.

Yes, most of the Cineuropa article is comprised of rumors we’ve been reporting for a few weeks now, but there is surprisingly new intel to be found:

  • Jay Roach's Roger Ailes biopic "Fair and Balanced" is rumored to premiere out-of-competition.

  • Armando Iannucci's "The Personal History of David Copperfield” also seems to be headed towards an OOC slot.

  • A major find for American cinema will be director Danielle Lesowitz’ debut, "Port Authority," which is rumored to be part of the Un Certain Regard section of the fest.

  • Rumor has it that Pablo Larrain’s “Ema” will not make it to Cannes because…wait for it…Netflix is in the midst of finalizing a deal to buy it. Ouch.

I have also been told that the new Cristi Puiu is 199 minutes. Also, Marco Bellocchio’s new movie has major ‘Godfather’ vibes.

23 SOLID BETS for competition:

‘Ad Astra' Not Going to Cannes; Malick's Latest WWII Drama Now Titled ‘A Hidden Life'

April 3, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

We are just two weeks away from the unveiling of the Cannes lineup. And so, we are in complete overdrive to bring you the latest news concerning this most prestigious of festivals. Take for example, the latest rumor that James Gray’s “Ad Astra” will most likely NOT make it to Cannes. Shocking? Yes and no. We’ve been assuming that, if ready, Gray’s sci-fi film, starring Brad Pitt, would make it to the croisette but it looks like it just isn’t able to make the cutoff date, at least according to Cédric Succivalli’s Twitter page. Again, I must mention, Cédric should be trusted, he’s very much in the know with these sort of things. The problem with the the Gray seems to be its special effects, which are still in post-production.

Cannes 2019: Jarmusch, Malick and Almodovar Confirmed; Ari Aster's ‘Midsommar' not going.

April 2, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” might not be going to Cannes after all. At least, that’s what rumors have been hinting at. The film is set to be released in August, does that mean a bow at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival could be an option?

Cannes 2019: Jim Jarmusch's "The Dead Don't Die" Will Be Released in June. Hmm ...

March 28, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

I have had a hit and miss vibe with Jim Jarmusch for a few decades now, but I do have to say I absolutely adore “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Down By Law,” Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai,” “Broken Flowers” and “Paterson.” Those are incredible movies. (I’m still iffy about “Dead Man” but a rewatch is in order)

Netflix Plans to Skip Cannes Film Festival; Martin Scorsese's ‘The Irishman' Won't Be Ready Until Fall.

March 18, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

I have been insisting, for months now, that Netflix and Cannes can solve their issues and come to an agreement with Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” being part of the possible solution. Well, now that we are hearing that Scorsese’s film won’t even be ready on time for May fest, Variety is confirming that the streaming giant will be skipping the festival entirely for the second year in a row.
