‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Review Embargo Lifts — 83% RT, 65 MC— $100M Opening?

June 9, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

I expected the worst for this one, but reviews make it out to not a complete disaster.

The review embargo for the “How to Train Train Your Dragon” live-action remake has lifted, and it currently sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes (40 reviews) and 65 on Metacritic (11 reviews).

Honestly, not bad for a live-action remake. I’m not the targeted audience for it, but positive ink will surely help it commercially. Internal tracking has the film aiming for a $90M-$100M opening weekend.

Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and co-directed the original animated trilogy, returns to direct the live-action remake. The film, which stars Mason Thames, Gerard Butler, Nico Parker, and Nick Frost, is set to hit theaters this Friday.
