Greg Kwedar, fresh off his Oscar-nominated prison drama “Sing Sing,” has decided to switch gears in a big way—he’s directing “Possum Song,” a surreal musical comedy headlined by Miles Teller (“Whiplash”).
The film’s script was penned by “Chippendales” writer Isaac Adamson, and it’ll be shopped around at Cannes because nothing says “Oscar potential” like a talking possum with a recording contract.
Teller plays Eddie, a smug Nashville sensation whose chart-topping debut was built on a lie—he stole the songs. Now he’s facing artistic burnout, impending fatherhood, and the moral hangover of his deception. Enter: a magical possum with serious songwriting chops and a suspiciously Faustian deal. Yes, you read that right. A possum. That writes music.
Kwedar and Bentley, whose “Sing Sing” earned three Oscar nominations after being picked up by A24, are building out their own creative universe. Their previous work includes “Jockey” (a Sundance prizewinner) and Netflix’s upcoming “Train Dreams,” which features a cast including Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, William H. Macy, and Kerry Condon.
