Ryan Coogler pitched “Sinners” as the start of an IP. When Warner Bros. first acquired the film, THR reported it was pitched with “franchise potential.” Part of his contract with Warner Bros was to get the IP rights back after 25 years.
Now, with “Sinners” pulling in nearly $270M domestically, that potential could become reality. A new listing in Production Weekly shows “Sinners 2” is now “in development,” with Coogler expected to return as director.
While the sequel is listed, it would likely not move forward until Coogler wraps his upcoming “X-Files” reboot, and possibly “Black Panther 3” as well. Still, in Hollywood, a hit original IP like this doesn’t just end with one film. There’s simply too much money on the table for “Sinners 2” not to eventually happen.
