Here’s a trailer for Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” which is set to screen less than four hours from now here at Cannes.
French actor Guillaume Marbeck will portray Jean-Luc Godard, while Zoey Deutch stars as Jean Seberg, the iconic “Breathless” beauty. Additionally, newcomers Jean-Jacques Le Vessier, Jodie Ruth-Forest, and Jonas Marmy will also appear in the film.
The cinematography is handled by David Chambille, known for his work on Bruno Dumont’s last three films (“L’Empire,” “France,” and “Joan of Arc”). “Nouvelle Vague” is filmed in black and white with a 1:33:1 aspect ratio, similar to how Godard’s Breathless was shot in 1959.
The film will feature iconic filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard, Jean Cocteau, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville, Eric Rohmer, and Jacques Rivette—many of whom played a pivotal role in the rise of the French New Wave in the 1960s. No additional casting details have been released yet.
This marks Linklater’s first film entirely in French. The project will explore the origins of the French New Wave and focus on the making of Godard’s groundbreaking 1959 film, A Bout de Souffle (Breathless).
“Nouvelle Vague” is being described as both a “comedy” and a “love letter” to the French New Wave and its key figures. In a recent interview, Linklater confirmed the film’s direction, noting that it “was shot like a New Wave film.”
