The Chronology of Water: Praise & Disappointment Greet Kristen Stewart’s Debut [Cannes]

May 17, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

At a film festival, schedules can be tricky, and sometimes a movie just doesn’t fit into your time frame. That was the case for me with Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, “The Chronology of Water.”

The film has stirred a wide range of reactions at Cannes. On one end, critics from Variety, IndieWire, The Wrap, Rolling Stone, and Time Out have sung its praises. On the other side, outlets like Deadline, Screen, Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Next Best Picture, and The Times were less impressed, though many acknowledged Imogen Poots’ “excellent” performance.

Stewart mentioned having submitted a very rought cut of ‘Chronology’ for Cannes, and that she will now be going back to the editing room after the festival.

The film, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, is an “exploration of one woman’s trauma, loss, and self-reinvention,” offering an unflinching portrayal of abuse, addiction, love, and artistic awakening.
