Here’s Deadline with an update on Cannes, and the lineup is currently forming as we speak. Cannes’ Thierry Fremaux recently teased that half the selection has already been confirmed, but that there are still a lot of decisions to be made. He has three days to lock it up as the lineup is getting revealed on April 10.
One particular film that’s been the subject of much Cannes speculation is Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love,” starring Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence, and according to Deadline, it looks like it might not be announced on Thursday. However, don’t take it out of your predictions just yet, Ramsay’s film might still be a late addition.
We hear that Lynne Ramsay’s new film Die, My Love, which has Scorsese among its producers, may not be ready in time to be announced at Thursday’s presser but could potentially be added at a later date.
This is total deja vu for Ramsay as her last film, “You Were Never Really Here,” was also a late submission at Cannes 2017. It ended up screening without any end credits as the film had just wrapped shooting that same month. It still managed to garner great reviews at the fest.
Ramsay admitted that the film was sent to Cannes by her producer way before it was ready. Her producer told her to just insert storyboards where there hadn't been anything filmed yet, which she refused to do. She ended up continuing to edit the film, after Cannes, throughout the summer. Regardless, it was a wise decision as Ramsay’s film won Best Screenplay and Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor.
Meanwhile, the submission of “Die, My Love” won’t be as frenetic. The film wrapped in October, and Ramsay has been editing it for six months now. Described as a “psychological thriller,” the film is an adaptation of a novel of Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz’s novel, which is a stark tale, set in rural France, about a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood. Martin Scorsese produced the film. Ramsay co-wrote the screenplay with Enda Walsh.
“Die, My Love” is set to be Ramsay’s first film in over seven years. In fact, she’s only directed four films during the course of her 24-year career: “Ratcatcher,” “Morvern Callar,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “You Were Never Really Here.” All bangers.
