‘A Minecraft Movie’ Had A Total of 28 Writers Working on the Script

April 7, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Yes, “A Minecraft Movie” earned $300M this weekend, and no it’s not a good movie. No surprise, mega box office numbers do not equate to quality cinema.

It turns out that, on its way to the big screen, ‘Minecraft’ went through an inordinate amount of writers. Sure, final WGA-sanctioned credits for the film list six different names, but the dirty little secret is that four times as many people took a crack at the script.

If you go on the WGA website, the list of names grows exponentially. The number is actually 28 writers, and the list doesn’t even include Jason Momoa who recently confirmed having written a specific scene for the film.

These names appear in the “Additional Literary Material” credit section, which was created five years ago, as a “way to acknowledge writers’ work on a film where they are not formally credited.”

Megan Amram, Kevin Biegel, John Francis Daley, Dana Fox, Hannah Friedman, Jason Fuchs, Jonathan Goldstein, Jared Hess, Phil Augusta Jackson, Lauryn Kahn, Rob McElhenney, Kieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Zak Penn, Simon Rich, Peter Sollet, Laura Steinel, Jon Spaihts, Oren Uziel, Ben Wexler.

Screen Crush’s Matt Singer was curious about how often it is to have so many writers listed on a project within the WGA site, and based on a glance through numerous blockbusters titles the last few years, he couldn’t find a single film that even came close to ‘Minecraft.’

Many films since the introduction of the "additional literary material" credit have shown a lot of writers getting credited for it. However, the ones I found that came closest to “Minecraft” were “The Amateur” (10 writers), “Borderlands” (9), and “Snow White” (7).

It should be noted that ‘Minecraft’ was first greenlit by Warner Bros in July 2015, and that an innumerable amount of drafts were penned by writers since then. It turns out, the studio’s patience was worth it in the end since the film has now become the most successful blockbuster of 2025, so far.
