First Look at Kelly Reichardt's ‘The Mastermind'

April 30, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

One of the more anticipated U.S. titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival is Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind.” The ensemble cast includes Josh O’Connor, Alana Haim, John Magaro, Hope Davis, Bill Camp (!!!), Gaby Hoffmann, Amanda Plummer, and Cole Doman,

The film has now unveiled its first official images ahead of its premiere in the main competition (via Deadline). MUBI is backing the film domestically and overseas. There is no release date attached just yet for the film, and maybe it’ll continue its festival trek in the fall, Reichardt certainly has an open slot available for her at NYFF.

In a sedate corner of Massachusetts circa 1970, JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor) an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief, plans his first big heist. When things go haywire, his life unravels.

Since this is a Kelly Reichardt movie, expect plenty of long takes, stripped-down dialogue and minimalist drama. The characters in her films live on the fringes of society. She’s also become one of the most influential filmmakers of the last decade; if you’ve seen last year’s acclaimed indie “Good One,” directed by India Donaldson, you just can’t escape the Reichardt influence.

Reichardt’s last film, 2022’s “Showing Up,” premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Some of her most acclaimed works include “First Cow,” “Wendy & Lucy,” “Old Joy,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Certain Women.”
