Cannes 78 Intel Starts to Leak [Updated]

April 9, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Hafsia Herzi’s “La Petite Dernière,” Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha,” and Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” confirmed for competition.

EARLIER: This will be an open thread to chat and speculate about all things Cannes. The lineup for the 78th edition will be revealed tomorrow morning. I assume the opening night film will also be announced in the process.

As we speak, the selection committee is internally confirming titles, albeit at a very slow pace. I’ll be updating this post as the intel continues to pour in. Only if a major development occurs (i.e. Malick) will I write a separate article. Usually, things get going by midday.

So far, I’m only hearing about Sergei Loznitsa’s “Two Prosecutors,” Jafar Panahi’s Untitled Film, and Kleber Mendonca Filho’s “The Secret Agent" having been confirmed today.

Word is that this year’s lineup will have an unusually high number of late additions — many directors are currently rushing to make it to Cannes. The most pertinent question marks remain new films by Terrence Malick, Park Chan-wook, Bi Gan, Kelly Reichardt, Luca Guadagnino, and Lynne Ramsay.

CURRENT PREDICTIONS: Ramsay, Ducournau, Jarmusch, Aster, Anderson, Panahi, Malick, Mendonça Filho, Trier, Dardenne, Lapid, Serebrenikkov, Schilinski, Loznitsa, Pálmason, Zlotowski, Bi Gan, Reichardt, Desplechin, Chomet, Laxe

More to come …
