UPDATE: I’ve added Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love,” which is not 122 minutes, but rather 118 minutes, the lengthiest film of her career. She must have shortened it further in last few days. I’ve also learned that Ramsay shot this film in 1.33:1 and, partially, on the very rare Kodak Ektachrome.
I’ve also added the runtimes for “A Simple Accident,” and “Romeria,”
EARLIER: There’s been a leak of Cannes competition titles and their runtimes via publicists, press releases, and the festival itself. I’ve just updated the list with “History of Sound.”
Ari Aster’s upcoming film, “Eddington,” looks set to continue his streak of lengthy features. With a runtime of 148 minutes, it marks yet another ambitious outing from the filmmaker.
For context, Aster’s previous films have followed a similar pattern. “Hereditary” ran 127 minutes, while “Midsommar” clocked in at 147 minutes—171 in its extended director’s cut. His most recent film, the divisive “Beau is Afraid,” stretched to 179 minutes.
On the shorter end, films from Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, and the Dardennes are expected to come in around the 100-minute mark. Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha” runs about 2 hours and 8 minutes, while Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” comes in at 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Currently, the longest entries in competition appear to be “The Sound of Falling” and “The Secret Agent,” both hovering around 160 minutes. Bi Gan’s “Resurrection,” which is rumored to be added soon, is 2.5 hours.
