Zach Cregger’s sophomore effort is the highly anticipated “Weapons,” which was originally dated for January 16, 2026 release. As previously reported by The InSneider, “Weapons” has now been officially moved up to August 8, 2025 release.
Test screenings have been great for this film, and Warner Bros seems to believe it has a winner in its hands. I now expect a trailer to show up at CinemaCon during the first week of April. A world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival would also be nice.
“Weapons” has a plot told via multi and inter-related storylines. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia” was reportedly a major influence. Having read Cregger’s script, I can see why this comparison would get made, especially given the structural nature of the script, but genre-wise, “Weapons” is a whole different beast.
The plot tackles the disappearance of children in a small town; they all wake up in the middle of the night and walk out of their homes, not to be seen again. Everyone is bewildered, and the rest of the film tells the story from the perspective of multiple characters: teachers, detectives, family.
Back in 2023, and after an epic bidding war, New Line secured the rights to Cregger’s “Weapons” spec script, and that was within 24 hours after offering $38M to cover the budget and talent, with Cregger receiving $10M for his part as writer, director, and producer and Final Cut privilege.
Josh Brolin, who tends to be very picky with his projects, recently admitted that he was convinced to join “Weapons” after reading the script, “I'm serious when I say I think it's a brilliant design of a script. Brilliant."
The ensemble cast for “Weapons” includes the likes of Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Burke, Austin Abrams, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong and June Diane Raphael.
