Celine Song’s “Materialists” is skipping film festivals and releasing on June 13 via A24. It won’t even make it to Cannes. A poster was just released for the film (below) and the trailer is coming online tomorrow morning.
I don’t know what to make of this film. The test reactions hinted at a commercial rom-com, but if you’re Song, is this the kind of film you decide to make after a critically acclaimed debut like “Past Lives”?
The film is being described as “Hitch” by way of James L. Brooks. Dakota Johnson stars as a workaholic matchmaker who has to confront what she wants out of love — and that includes a romantic triangle that involves Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.
A peculiar project, and it’ll be interesting to catch the first footage tomorrow morning. Song has brought back some of the “Past Lives” crew for “Materialists,” and that includes cinematographer Shabier Kirchner — I’m wondering if it’ll have a similar aesthetic.
