Netflix is attempting to steer its $30M+ Oscar campaign for “Emilia Perez” in the right direction, and this means, quite wisely, ignoring that its controversial star Karla Sofia Gascón was even in the movie.
The latest FYC ads for “Emilia Perez” now have Gascón’s name not appearing anywhere. Other nominees, such as director Jacques Audiard and Supporting Actress Zoe Saldana, are mentioned, but Gascón, who is up for Best Actress, is nowhere to be found. Netflix has basically thrown in the towel.
This latest development comes a little over 24 hours after Gascón’s hot mess of an interview with CNN, where she repeatedly broke down crying, saying “I’m not a racist.” Apparently, and according to THR, the interview had been set up by Gascón without Netflix’s knowledge.
Gascón had recently been forced to apologize for old tweets in which she defended Hitler, insulted Muslims, George Floyd, Chinese people, her co-star (Selena Gomez) and the 2021 “Afro-Korean” Oscars. In the span of 24 hours, Gascón single-handedly destroyed Netflix’s “Emilia Perez” Oscar campaign.
