All eyes on “Captain America: Brave New World” this weekend. The industry will be keeping a close look on the film’s second weekend tally, especially after last week’s decent $88M opening. There’s not really any other competition, except for Osgood Perkins’ “The Monkey,” modestly budgeted at $10M, which earned a strong $1.9M in Thursday previews.
Earlier in the week, Deadline predicted a -67% second weekend drop for “Captain America: Brave New World.” A $30M+ opening was being projected by the trade. Turns out, their numbers were off. The negative reception this film has gotten is hurting turnout. There’s really no other way to put it.
It would take a miracle for ‘Brave New World’ to have the kind of drop Deadline had indicated. On Thursday, the film only nabbed $3M which is way below what was predicted. We’re looking at one hell of an epic drop this weekend, definitely in the -70s, and a $26M-$28M 3-day tally.
The film absolutely needs a $30M+ weekend, otherwise this is going to turn into a toxic failure for Marvel head Kevin Feige. However, the numbers are not on its side. What we’re about to witness is the latest ‘Captain America’ movie earning less than ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp.’ Yikes.
