Bong Joon-ho, who is in the middle of his press tour for “Mickey 17,” and recently shot an animated film, has confirmed what his next project will be.
In a new interview with MBC Korea, Bong told host Seon Seok-hee that — following his already-shot animated film about sea creatures — he plans to direct a horror action film set in an underground subway in Seoul.
Bong goes on to describe the project as a story that he’s been passionately pursuing for almost 25 years:
That's kind of like my life project. I've been thinking about it since 2001.
Bong is then asked to describe the opening scene of this mysterious new horror project, to which he accepts to reveal what the first 90 seconds of the film might look like:
We're running through the underground section of the subway. In the car next to us, people wearing similar clothes start to come over to our side. We're running. A lot of people start to come over to our side.
Back in 2020, Bong briefly mentioned this project, which he described as a “Korean film, set in Seoul, with unique elements of horror and action,” but on a similar scale as 2006’s “The Host.”
Bong’s style is known to mix genres, but his only “horror” film to date remains “The Host,” which starred Song Kang-ho and dealt with a mutated beast, emerging from the Han River, that ends up terrorizing the citizens of Seoul.
In the meantime, we do have a new Bong film to look forward to — “Mickey 17,” a sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson, hits theatres nationwide on March 7.
