David Sirota received an Oscar nomination for writing 2021’s “Don’t Look Up.” Although Best Picture nominated, the disaster dramedy was not liked by critics; the reviews were mediocre (56% Rotten Tomatoes), and it’s clear Sirota is still bitter about the reception.
As L.A. fires continue on their rampage, Sirota has decided to go on X to claim that the tragedy proves how wrong critics and “elite pundits” were to dismiss “Don’t Look Up”:
The city of Los Angeles is a raging inferno less than three years after a bunch of elite pundits and film critics insisted Don’t Look Up was too heavy handed and too unsubtle about the climate crisis
There’s a simple point here that’s way bigger than a movie — there’s a big problem with media (and social media) that continue to smugly insinuate that being too on the nose about the climate crisis is somehow uncouth, unsophisticated and unacceptable.
Sirota is trying to link this horrific natural disaster with his ill-received movie. People are dying and homes are being destroyed and this guy is upset that his movie didn’t get the love that it deserved. Sirota’s BFF, Adam McKay, who directed “Don’t Look Up,” of course retweeted the post.
