BAFTA — the British Academy — announced their first round of voting this morning for awards contention. They are major fans of “Emilia Perez,” (15 mentions) and “Conclave” (14).
BAFTA is a big deal if you follow the Oscar race. Last year, BAFTA members made up around half (325) of the UK Academy voters (650). There has definitely been a rise in the number of international voters in the Oscar race, the UK bloc is the largest, followed by various European and Scandinavian countries. So, today’s shortlist could have a major impact in how the Oscar nominations might turn out.
So, with that said, we shouldn’t necessarily focus on who got nominated especially since each category is stacked with 10+ nominees. Rather, it’s more important to look at who didn’t get in because that could spell trouble for that film or actor’s Oscar chances.
The biggest omission was Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) not making the cut for the 10 best actress nods. Jolie plays the title role of Maria Callas, and is nominated for a Golden Globe Award this Sunday. Meanwhile, Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”) was also snubbed for Best Actress, but her ‘Last Showgirl’ co-star Jamie Lee Curtis somehow made it in as Best Supporting Actress.
It should also be noted the total absence of “A Real Pain,” “Sing Sing” and “Nickel Boys” in the Best Film category. Many were predicting all three films for a best picture Oscar nomination, but the BAFTA snub is surely worrisome and to the benefit of “The Substance.”
However, the biggest surprise must be Ellen Kuras (“Lee”) being nominated for Best Director, as was her star, Kate Winslet. Meanwhile, major boosts for “The Apprentice” and “The Substance,” both were shortlisted for Best Film. You can also stick a fork on “September 5” which was again snubbed, and has been gaining zero steam these last few months.
