After his Netflix mega-hit “Carry-On,” marking one of the streamer’s most-watched movies of all-time, the ever-prolific Jaume Collet-Serra is releasing two films in 2025. He has his already-shot “Cliffhanger” coming soon, but first up is his return to horror, “The Woman in the Yard,” which reteams him with Danielle Deadwyler.
A trailer has been released for ‘Woman in the Yard,’ Collet-Serra’s Blumhouse-backed horror flick. Take note, the film was written by first-time feature screenwriter Sam Stefanak. This one could go either way. A theatrical release of March 28 has been set up for the film.
Here’s the cryptic synopsis:
Ramona assumes the woman is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps nearer and nearer to the house, it becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the grasp of the woman who simply won’t leave them alone.
In my books, Collet-Serra is a decent enough filmmaker, and I’m not surprised he’s found streaming success with “Carry-On” — his style perfectly suits streaming sensibilities. However, “The Woman in the Yard” is being dubbed as his return to the horror genre; He directed 2009’s “Orphan,” which gained a cult following in the years since its release.
Collet-Serra has directed some of Liam Neeson’s better actions movies, like “Non-Stop,” “Run All Night,” “The Commuter,” and “Unknown.” He’s also sadly responsible for perpetrating on us “Black Adam,” “Jungle Cruise” and “House of Wax” (the Paris Hilton remake). You can’t win ‘em all.
He’s built up a peculiar filmmaking career, one steeped in, dare I say, elevated mediocrity. That seems to be his forte. Just take a look at his filmography, is there any film of his that actually stands out?
