Payal Kapadia Turning ‘All We Imagine As Light' Into A Mumbai-Set Trilogy

January 10, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” has been topping the high brow 2024 critics polls, including Sight & Sound and Film Comment. The film also won the Grand Prix at last year’s Cannes. Not bad for her first narrative feature.

Kapadia is now telling Variety that she plans to turn it into a trilogy of films, set in Mumbai, and that she’s already started writing the next one.

“I started writing my next movie and it’s also going to be a film in Bombay. It’s a bit early, but I’m thinking about doing two more films in Bombay, and to have this kind of a trilogy,” Kapadia tells the outlet.

In 2021, Kapadia won the Golden Eye award for best documentary film at the 74th Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” She’s now firmly left non-fiction filmmaking and will instead be focusing on her “Mumbai trilogy.”
