‘Freaky Friday 2' Starts Production on July 31

April 22, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: So, this sequel is actually happening. A July 31st production start date is set for “Freaky Friday 2”, with Lohan and Curtis returning. Nisha Ganatra (“Late Night”) is directing.

EARLIER: Disney’s “Freaky Friday”, released in 2003, has amassed a big following over the years. So much so that there’s been fan demand for a sequel. It might actually be coming very soon.

Lindsay Lohan has now confirmed that a sequel is imminent and that Jamie Lee Curtis will also be reprising her role in the original. It’s more than just in development, it might start shooting very soon.

The Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan mother/daughter film was a very likeable, and entertaining, body-swapping comedy. Nothing more, nothing less. A harmlessly well-done comedy that used familiar tropes in fun ways.

Apparently, the film can count Quentin Tarantino as a major fan. “Freaky Friday” director, Mark Waters, spoke to THR about his run-in with Tarantino at a party:

One time, I got cornered at a party by Quentin Tarantino, who outlined in great detail shot by shot that sequence of the House of Blues to me. He was like outlining why it was a genius scene and a perfect ending for the movie, and I was like, ‘This is cool man. Quentin Tarantino was like, fan-geeking me.'

The scene Tarantino was raving about from the teen comedy had Lohan’s character performing the song “Take Me Away” with her fictional band Pink Slip in a battle of the bands, shot at House of Blues in Hollywood.

It’s not the first time Tarantino has praised “Freaky Friday.” He once gushed about Lohan, saying “I’ve always loved Lindsay. She is a terrific, terrific actor. I think the work she did in “Freaky Friday” was just top notch acting.”

As for Lohan, she’s … changed. She's married to Dubai financier Bader Shammas, with boat loads of plastic surgery, and barely any movie roles in over 10 years. Lohan made an acting comeback in late 2022 with the Netflix hit “Falling For Christmas” — it was her first prominent acting gig since 2013’s Paul Schrader-directed “The Canyons.”
