“Wicked” releases on VOD next week, December 31st. Just over a month after the film began its theatrical release. They waited until the Christmas rush was done before announcing the date.
It doesn’t matter that “Wicked” is still racking up some big money at the domestic box-office ($400M and counting) — Universal believes 40 days in theaters was more than enough time to now make it available online. Expect this one to do huge numbers on VOD platforms.
Welcome to the new normal, where studios have now found a way to make considerable profit out of rushing their new titles to digital. Hey, at least the “Wicked” digital release will feature 10 deleted and extended scenes, including “Glinda teaching Elphaba the art of Toss Toss.” Can’t wait.
