‘The Passion of the Christ’ Sequel Split into Two Parts

November 2, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The rumor was that Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ’ sequel would be split into two parts and its IMDB page now states it that way. The current title is “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection - Part I.” There’s also a 2025 release date attached.

In a July interview, Jim Caviezel (who plays Jesus) spoke about the sequel, and claimed that it’ll be split into a few movies:

I asked him [Mel Gibson] would you be ready to go in January, he said “yeah, maybe.” I said “how about the end of fall,” he said “yeah, maybe.” So who knows […] it might be two films, maybe three, but I think it’s two.

In another interview, Caviezel used hyperbole by saying the ‘Passion’ sequel “will be the biggest film in the history of the world,” adding, “Mel [Gibson] took me through all of the scenes and I was on the floor crying […] it’ll be one of the best things you’ve ever seen. I can’t tell you [when it’s coming out]. If I told you I’d have to kill you.”

Back in January, I had heard that Gibson was finally, very close, to shooting “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” a mid-year shoot had been planned. Now we’re looking at production possibly starting in January in Mexico.

The sequel to Gibson’s 2004 mega-hit "The Passion of the Christ” has been ruminating in development for around ten years now. The original made $612 Million on a scant $30 million budget making it one of the most succesful independent films of all-time.

Gibson has been hard at work on the screenplay with “Braveheart” screenwriter Randall Wallace — there have already been six drafts. ‘Resurrection’ would focus on the twenty-four hours encompassing Jesus’ passion and the events that occurred three days between his crucifixion and resurrection.

Gibson wrapped filming “Flight Risk” in September, which stars Mark Whalberg. It’s set to be his first directorial effort since 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which garnered multiple Oscar nominations include Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
