I watched Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” last night. That’s for another post, but I will say solid first hour and mediocre second.
The film had its North American premiere a week ago at the New York Film Festival and during the post-screening Q&A conducted by Emily Mortimer, the actress revealed that she was collaborating with Baumbach on his next film. No further details were given.
I assume that Netflix might not be backing this next project. “White Noise” had a budget balloon to more than $100 million and it doesn’t look like the film will be up for any awards given the inaccessibility of the material and the not-so-enthusiastic reviews.
Regardless, “White Noise” is an incredibly ambitious and oddly fascinating misfire for Baumbach. It deserves to be seen, but I do wonder how receptive mainstream Netflix audiences will be towards it, probably a fairly hostile acceuil awaits it.
