‘Capone’ Is a Hit on VOD; Takes In Staggering $2.5M+

May 22, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Bron Studios’ Tom Hardy gangster pic “Capone” took in a 10-day gross of $2.5M in its first 10 days of release. That’s an astounding number for a movie that had countless delays to its name and ended up garnering mixed reviews upon its release.

The Josh Trank-directed movie was released on May 12th via viewer-on-demand platforms and soared to No.1 on iTunes within its first three days of release. This success story will only encourage studios more to balk at theatrical releases and just go straight to VOD platform.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls World Tour” has made an astonishing $100M on PVOD, causing the ire of both AMC and Regal, and their next big streaming title will be Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” set for a June 12th release date and already garnering glowing buzz from the very few who have seen it already.

I wrote about “Capone” on 05.11.20:

“Capone” attempts to suck you into the deranged psyche of the famous mobster through surreal dream/hallucination sequences filled with sexuality, violence, and sheer morbidness. More intriguingly, however, we are never really sure if what’s happening on-screen is dream or reality. This is meant to place the viewer inside Capone’s disturbing mind and makes him the most unreliable narrator you can have to tell this story.”

“The climax, the most graphic and shocking bout of violence in the film, is a total stunner. Showcasing a state of mind gone rogue, steeped into anarchy, and ravenously unleashed, it encapsulates the spirit of a movie driven by Hardy’s performance and Trank’s gruesomely grotesque imagery. “Capone” might not be what many expected from a movie about the notorious gangster, but that’s precisely why it somewhat, against all odds, succeeds.”
