My ultimate wish, and glass-half-full moment, for this COVID-19 pandemic, is that it turns out to be a humbling-inducing moment for this divisive world we live in. We badly needed a wakeup call, especially in the U.S, where partisanship and fervent hatred for each other’s political ideals were damaging the country to its core. Sometimes a tragedy can bring peace and tranquility, although, sadly, I’m still seeing this toxic partisanship all over my social media, with red state and blue state still at war over how to manage and contain this virus.
David Lynch seems to be of the same mindset. Speaking to Vice, Lynch began by talking about his life-long obsession with Transcendental Meditation and also how he’s making new light fixtures at his home. However, when the subject turns to the pandemic’s effect on the future, the legendary filmmaker remains an optimist and believes that, when all is said and done, the pandemic would have brought more kindness to the world:
“For some reason, we were going down the wrong path and Mother Nature just said, ‘Enough already, we’ve got to stop everything,’” Lynch said about the coronavirus outbreak. “This is going to last long enough to lead to some kind of new way of thinking.”
He added, “I think it’s going to be much more spiritual and much kinder and it’s going to bring us all closer together in a really strong and beautiful way. It’s going to be a different world on the other side and it’s going to be a much more intelligent world. Solutions to these problems are going to come and life’s going to be very good. The movies will come back. Everything will spring back and in a much better way probably.”
Again, if you want to read the whole interview and it’s quite an interesting read, you can head over to Vice. You may not agree with everything that Lynch says, but his thoughts on the current state of affairs feel like an oasis in a sea of muck.
