‘The Prom': Netflix Musical Strictly For Ryan Murphy Fans? [Trailer]

November 26, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

I’m not a fan of Ryan Murphy’s art, but I do have to give him credit for being so prolific and gathering up this huge fanbase over the past few years. His deal with Netflix has resulted in a gluttonous amount of shows (and movies) already, “Ratched,” “Hollywood,” “Boys In The Band” and “The Politician”. Despite the negative reviews, he keeps chugging along, again, mostly due to his passionate following.

Murphy (“American Horror Story” “Glee” “The Politician”) further uses his mega-deal with Netflix to debut the comedy musical “The Prom,” following a group of self-obsessed theater actors who swarm to a small Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. Adapted from the book of the same name by Bob Martin, the film carries with it immense star power in the form of Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, James Corden, and Keegan Michael Key.

With all that being said, “The Prom” has been screening for a “select few” people from the press. These “select few” have been saying very good things about it behind the veil of embargo, which is supposed to be lifted this coming weekend, for social media at least. I mean, do you blame these people? We’ve just gone through a uber depressing year filled with a pandemic, a contested election, and social justice protests/riots. Maybe some folks out there need this kind of sugary hokum to get through the final days of this disillusioning year.

“The Prom” lands on Netflix, December 11. Watch the first trailer here:

The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) who are New York City stage...
