Tom Hooper’s ‘Cats’ May Not Be Ready in Time For Awards Season

November 8, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Tom Hooper’s “Cats,” a much-anticipated awards season juggernaut, is starting to provoke a lot of speculation about whether it can and will be finished on time for an awards-season launch.

That’s what IndieWire’s Anne Thompson is reporting today, as it appears that “Cats” will be blowing off multiple awards deadlines including the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review, and could only be finished on-time to screen for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes).

Does this sudden delay have anything to do with the lackluster trailer released earlier this summer? I don’t know, but the negative response the trailer got must have certainly irked the studio to no end. There was the rumor that Hooper and company ended up re-doing a significant portion of the CGI - which was the butt of numerous jokes all over social media right after footage premiered.

Directed by Hooper, who won an Oscar as Best Director for “The King’s Speech,” “Cats” will have a very tough road ahead this a Holiday season. Even if the film is finished on time for SAG, I just can’t see a positive response happening for Hooper’s Broadway musical adaptation. That’s a real shame considering the stunning ensemble, which includes Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, and Idris Elba.

”Cats” is set to hit theatres on Christmas.
