Netflix Cancels Its Most Popular Marvel Shows (‘Daredevil' and ‘Luke Cage') As it Gears up for Streaming War Against Disney+

Marvel’s recent run on Netflix had an impressive array of popular shows like “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist,” “The Defenders,” and “The Punisher.” Had is the key word, as Netflix has already cancelled 4 of those 6 shows, and will probably ax the remaining two (“Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher”) in the coming months. There is no doubt in everybody's mind why Netflix would go through cancelling some of their most popular Marvel shows and that reason is quite simple: Disney+.

The upcoming Disney streaming service is bound to become an arch nemesis for Netflix. The cancellation of “Daredevil,” Netflix’s most popular Marvel show, will no doubt have fans raging, but chances are that the series will come back on Disney+ in 2019, a streaming site that is set to have all the Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney and 20th Century Fox films (when that merger eventually happens.)

In news that had rocked the industry to its core, Disney announced late last year that it would, eventually, be pulling its movies from Netflix and start a new streaming service solely composed of the Disney content — past, present, and future — which actually is pretty gigantic and could easily fill any streaming service. Netflix decided that instead of Disney pulling the shows and embarrassing them, it is all about power after all with these billion-dollar companies, it would just cancel the shows.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated that Disney+ would be would feature "new, original shows and movies, including original Marvel and Star Wars series" and the entire Disney back-catalog, which is a huge selling point for audiences.

Forget about Amazon Prime, Netflix has finally found its match, a true competitor to dethrone their crown. If there wasn't a legitimate streaming war, or anyone seriously contending for Netflix' crown, that is a thing of the past now because a battle between the mouse house and Netflix is inevitable. Let's get ready to rumble.

Since Netflix refuses to release its data, we can only guess what are the most-watched shows on the streaming service. Ditto most of its other competitors such as Hulu and Amazon Prime. And so, whenever a Parrot Analytics proprietary comes out with its own data and estimates, attention must be paid because, quite frankly, it's the only source we have. However, here's a surprise: a "Demand Expressions" metric shows that the Netflix hit "Stranger Things" was the most watched series on streaming in the last 90 days. In news that had rocked the industry to its core, Disney announced late last year that it would, eventually, be pulling its movies from Netflix and starting a new streaming service solely composed of the Disney content — past, present, and future — which actually is pretty gigantic and could easily fill any streaming service. The goal was, maybe still is, to launch the branded streaming service in 2019, which will be home for all their feature films and TV shows. It’s a huge move, but one that was inevitable.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is a Staten Island early-childhood educator lacking something meaningful in her life who starts obsessing over a gifted student, which leads to problems too good to reveal. Suffice to say, when you watch “The Kindergarten Teacher,” Sara Colangelo’s American remake of the similarly-titled Israeli drama, you are transported into what Gyllenhaal described to me as the psyche of a “starving, vibrant woman’s mind.”

Colangelo, who stunned more than a few moviegoers with her 2014 feature directing debut “Little Accidents,” creates a film with its own unique identity, the fleshing out of a woman who desperately needs to find meaning in her life. However, the movie belongs to Gyllenhaal, in an awards-worthy performance, who, along with Colangelo’s patient camera, keeps playing with our heads throughout the proceedings. The fact that she maintains a sort of sympathetic nature to her character makes this brilliant film all the more mysterious to the eyes.

Newly un-retired director Steven Soderbergh has already completed his upcoming movie titled “High Flying Bird,” set for release next year, but many of us were wondering what was going to happen with his “Panama Papers” project, an ambitious film about the infamous documents which actually goes by the title of “The Laundromat.”

Tamara Jenkins' "Private Life" is a film that gets the details right. Bowing as one of the 26 films chosen for the main slate of this year's 56th annual New York Film Festival, it zeroes in on a married couple (as played by Katherine Hahn and Paul Giamatti) coping with a neverending infertility struggle and the collapse of their marriage, as they navigate through the world of adoption and assisted reproduction. It features indelibly pertinent performances from Hahn, Giamatti, and newcomer Kayli Carter, the latter who plays the married couple's niece who agrees to be their egg donor. The New York City apartment all three share in the film, as they navigate in and out going to endless doctor's appointments, feels very much like a character of its own. It's in this closed claustrophobic atmosphere that the film tries to squeeze out the inner-kept emotional trauma of the characters.

Neville's narrative in 'Dead' focuses on Welles' final few decades on earth. The documentary is an attempt to dissect Welles' controversial and mysterious personality and to explain the experimental style in which Welles' worked between 1970-1990.

I didn't want to review Paul Greengrass’s "22 July" last week, mostly because it portrayed the white nationalist extremist who shot and killed 77 people at a Labor Youth camp in Oslo, as a rational person. Not just that, but Greengrass lays down the terrorist's agenda quite elaborately, having him explain exactly why he committed the insidious act. Briefly, the attacks were carried out to call attention to the wave of to Islamic immigration in Europe and to his view that feminism has created a European “cultural suicide”, whatever that means. The fact that Greengrass's camera has no problem letting the guy explain his extreme right-wing agenda in a measured and somewhat neutral fashion, handheld camera in tow, irked me.
