UPDATE: The trades are now confirming Johansson’s casting. She’s in “final negotiations” to take on an undisclosed role in the sequel.
EARLIER: Pre-production on the sequel to “The Batman” is finally picking up steam in Glasgow, and the first casting rumors are finally starting to surface.
Here’s Nexus Point News reporting that Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to join “The Batman: Part II.” Details about her potential role are being closely guarded, but she could play a new love interest for Bruce Wayne (or Poison Ivy?)
This would be the third franchise Johansson has joined in the last two years, following “Jurassic World” and “The Exorcist.” She also recently released her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great,” which premiered at Cannes. And, on a technicality — having appeared in an innumerable number of MCU-related films — she recently became the.highest-grossing actor of all-time.
Of course, this mainstream popularity doesn’t diminish Johansson’s talents as an actress. She can act. “Under the Skin” remains one of the most daring performances of the 2010s. “Marriage Story” proved her worth. She was divine in “Lost in Translation.” I also can’t overlook her exemplary work in “Match Point,” “Her,” and “Ghost World.” She can elevate a lot of things that she’s in.
As for “The Batman: Part II,” it’s supposed to start production in early 2026. Although Robert Pattinson will be back in the titular role, no other casting or plot details have been announced at this time, and we don’t even know who the villain will be — maybe it’s Johansson? I expect more details to come out this month.
More than likely, Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside Colin Farrell’s Penguin, Andy Serkis’ Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon. Barry Keoghan is also expected to appear once more as the Joker. That said, Zoë Kravitz will not be reprising her role as Catwoman.
The talent involved is certainly intriguing. Pattinson, Johansson, Farrell, Serkis, and Wright will be directed by Reeves, who will be working with DP Erik Messerschmidt. The film itself is eyeing an October 1, 2027, release.
